Peelframe

Eight tips for removing subtitles without a trace
Updated 2026-10-14 · Peelframe
AI subtitle removal does a decent job with one click, but a few habits make traces far less visible. These are ordered by how much difference they make in the Peelframe workspace.
1. Draw the area generously
If the area hugs the letters, their outline, shadow or translucent backing stays outside it and shows as a faint rim. Leave room on all sides so the subtitle and its shadow are fully inside. Parts of the area without letters keep the original picture, so a generous area costs little.
2. Split the area when subtitles move
If titles appear at the top and dialogue at the bottom, use separate areas rather than one covering the whole frame. You can draw up to four, each with its own start and end time. Restoring only where and when it is needed is faster and leaves the rest of the picture alone.
3. Narrow the search range for auto removal
Auto removal can mistake signs, logos or text on clothing for subtitles. If your subtitles always sit at the bottom, set the Search area to Bottom third. It protects text that should stay and shortens processing. Running Detect subtitles in this frame first shows you what will be picked up.
4. Adjust detection sensitivity
If thin or faint letters are left behind, set Detection sensitivity to High; if patterns that are not subtitles get removed, set it to Low. Start from Standard and move one step at a time. Very small or faint text and emoji can still be missed.
5. Preview 0.2 s of the hardest scene before saving
The AI restoration preview runs up to 0.2 seconds before you commit to the whole video. Pick the toughest moment, such as text over a face or a fast-moving background. If that looks right, the rest usually will too, and the measured speed gives you an estimate for the full run.
6. Touch up leftovers with the brush
Letter fragments left in the result do not mean starting over. In Leftover subtitle check, click a suspect frame to jump there, paint the remaining letters, set a start and end time and choose Re-restore selected range. Only that range is redone; the rest of the result stays as it is.
7. Use "Whole area" for boxed subtitles
The default Restoration scope, Text only, finds letters frame by frame and restores just those pixels, which touches the picture least. When subtitles sit on a translucent band or box that also needs to go, choose Whole area: the entire area is restored for the chosen time, band included.
8. Set up the machine
- Use a recent desktop Chrome or Edge with a GPU (WebGPU). Without one, processing falls back to the CPU and takes much longer.
- Keep the tab in front while it works. Switching tabs or minimising the window can slow it down or pause it.
- On a laptop, plug in the charger so the graphics run at full speed.
When traces remain
The AI estimates what was hidden, so an important area heavily covered by text, such as a face, may look different from the original. Restoration runs frame by frame, so filled areas can shimmer slightly over fast-moving backgrounds, and a low-resolution video does not become high-resolution. Check such scenes with the preview, and set save quality to Closest to the original to reduce compression loss.
For how the methods differ, see four ways to remove burned-in subtitles; for how processing works and what hardware helps, see how in-browser processing works.
